Ghana’s Future Under John Dramani Mahama: A Path to Economic Recovery

It is no longer news that Ghana is gradually drowning in debt, corruption, and environmental destruction. Ghana, which used to be one of the best African countries to invest in if you were an investor or a businessman looking to make a profit, is now the beast in the African economic market. This has caused many investors to flee, and those who have already established their businesses are relocating to other African countries because they can’t take it anymore.

Let me take you back a little. In 2016, before former President John Mahama left office, there were numerous multinational companies in the country, including Glovo Food, Nivea, Jumia Foods, Unilever Ghana’s Lipton Tea, Dark and Lovely, BET 365, and Game. These companies served as sources of employment for Ghanaian citizens, demanding both skilled and unskilled labor. But what do we see now?

It is so sad to see all these companies leave our shores because of economic hardship and taxes, yet some citizens are still engaging in tribalistic and partisan politics. These multinational companies have left the country because of taxes, and some notable ones are high corporate taxes, Value Added Tax (VAT), excise duties, the COVID-19 levy, and the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy). As citizens, let’s be realistic and face the facts. How do we expect these companies to remain in our country with all these taxes? We invest or start a business to make a profit, not a loss. Even if it gets worse, we should at least break even, not lose completely.

Ghana is at a crossroads. Our future lies in our own hands, and we must decide who to entrust our country to. Currently, we have two main candidates contesting, and we have seen what they have both done, both good and bad. Ghanaians have seen the work of former President John Mahama and the works of the current Vice President, H.E. Mahamudu Bawumia. I will say you don’t need to be told who to vote for; your conscience should do the talking.

Maybe you don’t know, but before John Mahama left office, he completed the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant, built the Kotoka International Airport Terminal 3, constructed the University of Ghana Medical Centre, and built 200 community day senior high schools, some of which have not been commissioned by the current government due to unknown political reasons. Mahama has done it before, and that is why it is not surprising to see nursing students and even graduates pleading with him to forgive them because he was a good man and a God-fearing one, of course.

Ghana will see the light of greatness again if we vote John Mahama into office come December 2024. He is indeed the president of the future, as said by the late President Jerry John Rawlings.
